Computing Services Available to Students at BML

When seeking information technology support at BML please review the BML IT Service Level Agreement.

BML IT Customer Service

BML IT serves as a centralized point of contact for computing issues. Requests regarding network access, file and printing services, the computer lab, BML audio visual resources, or questions related to the technologies or support listed in this document should be directed to:

bml-ithelp@ucdavis.edu
Room W205B
Weekdays 8 AM to 2 PM

After regular hours requests will be handled according to Customer Service Priorities the next business day.

Student Personal Laptops/Computers:

Student owned equipment is directly supported only for the purpose of connecting it to the BML network. This support will consist of assistance in assuring that the network interface card is correctly configured for the student's operating system to properly function on the network. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the operating system software is functioning properly and that the computer is free of viruses, spyware, and adware. (See supported operating systems.) Students may schedule a time with BML IT to get assistance with computer networking.

Please contact bml-ithelp if you would like to set up networking from your own personal computer. We can assist you with setting up printing services on your computer so that you may use the BML printers.

Wireless Network, BML Wireless

There is wireless network access available in many parts of the lab. The strongest signal is in the library, the Great Hall, the Lecture Hall and portions of the South Wing. You may have to search around a bit to find the best signal strength for your purposes. Also, you must register your computer’s MAC address with the IT department. The wifi access is “wide open,” but we need to know who you are. Please either walk in to the IT department with your laptop to register, or schedule a time with BML IT to get assistance with computer networking. All student computers on the BML network must meet Minimum Computer Security Requirements, and you must register your MAC address with BML IT.

Network Usage Policy - Please comply!

Because we have very limited bandwidth to the outside world, we have chronic network traffic issues.  Streaming or downloading of non-essential data via our network during business hours is NOT ALLOWED. Please keep in mind that those MP3’s you’re pulling from itunes may cause someone else’s work related download to fail. Be kind to your neighbor!

If you know you need to get a large download from somewhere, contact the IT department and we can help out by suggesting options or doing it for you.

Printing Services

The computer lab has one b&w duplexing printer. If you need color output, contact IT or your instructors.

Please print in duplex mode whenever possible, this makes use of both sides of the paper, a great feature. To do so, follow the links to the printer set up instructions for either the Mac or the PC. You may have to print one or two test sheets in order to fully understand the "flip on long edge or flip on short edge" concept and you should probably do this before you print a huge document, duplexed, only to find you don't like the orientation of the print job.

Computer Lab

The computer lab at BML features ~ a dozen PC’s fully networked with access to the internet and the BML LAN. Network drives have been mapped (see “BML on Seastar” on lab computers) so students can save their work on a file server. We cannot guarantee the security of locally saved work from these machines, so students must save their work on the file server. Directories for your specific class will be created for the lab computers. Please refrain from creating directories elsewhere on the shared/mapped drives - during our server housecleaning we occasionally remove unidentifiable or unclaimed data.

There is a film printer and flatbed scanner availabel in the computer lab. Do not attempt to use hardware you do not know how to use, ask for IT assistance, or follow posted instructions.

NOTE: Keep in mind that the BML computer lab is a common use area, use the hardware resources mindfully with respect for your fellow students and other lab users.

Please notify BML IT if you encounter any problems with the computer lab machines or need other assistance with hardware or software.

Software

Computer lab machines are loaded with many common software applications including Microsoft Office Suite, Acrobat, statistics packages (such as JMP, R, SigmaStat, SigmaPlot, SAS) Sophos Antivirus, etc. Please contact us if you need assistance installing additional software.

The Cadet Hand Library has 3 additional pc’s that are networked, but they do not have proprietary software applications installed on them.
