BML-UC DAVIS DIVING PROGRAM

SCUBA COURSES

PE128B RESEARCH DIVING TECHNIQUES (Offered Spring quarter and in early summer)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Scuba divers involved in subtidal research and/or training programs through an educational institution, such as UC Davis, are exempted from the Federal OSHA regulations concerning commercial diving if they have passed an approved training program. (Among other requirements). PE 128B meets those requirements and those of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS).

Along with more development of theory and techniques taught in PE 128A, this course will provide lectures and practical application of advanced diving techniques. Including; different decompression models and tables, navigation, light salvage, night diving, altitude, deep, decompression, bluewater, coldwater, blackwater diving, nitrox use, and drysuit diving. How to use these diving skills in a subtidal research project will be discussed and practiced. Subtidal data collection and research diving techniques and tools will be practiced. The practical application will be done on ongoing subtidal projects at Northern and Central California sites.

Students successfully completing the course may apply for Scientific Diver certification from the UCD Diving Control Board. This certification qualifies a diver to participate in subtidal research under UCD auspices. It also allows reciprocity with other institutions that are members of the AAUS.

NAUI Master Scuba Diver and Nitrox Diver certifications at completion of the course.
